What is the History of The Help?

On February 25, Micki McElya was featured on the MSNBC program "Melissa Harris-Perry" to discuss the history behind the Oscar-nominated film, The Help. She joined Melissa Harris-Perry, the show's host and a professor of political science at Tulane University, as well as writer and entertainer Elon James White and Barbara Young of the National Domestic Workers Alliance.

McElya wrote about the history of black domestic workeres in her 2007 book, Clinging to Mammy: The Faithful Slave in Twentieth Century America, which won an Outstanding Book Award from the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights.
